Pre-booking considerations are the topic for this part of our activity holidays guide.

There are a wide range of activity holidays that are designed to please, that have different fitness levels, experience, and interests. Little or no experience is required to participate, simply an eagerness to get out there and try something different.

Enthusiasm is only half of the equation though, with your level of fitness being the other half. Be sure that your fitness level coincides with the activities that you pick, so that you can be sure to get the most enjoyment possible from activity holidays. It is not fair for the other people in the group to be slowed down or put in danger, since your instructor/guide can only do so much for you.

You should get in contact with the holiday activity booking company if you believe that you age may be a barrier to doing a particular activity. There may or may not be barriers to people with disabilities, since most of the time activity holiday companies try to let all participate, but for some strenuous activities this is simply not possible.

A rating for each activity is usually put up on websites as well as brochures, for every trip that is offered. These are usually leisurely, moderate, or intense. These are made for your benefit, and they are rated from accounts of past guests. Only choose a moderate or intense one because your want a challenge, not because you think choosing a leisurely one will make you seem weak.

Weather conditions, remoteness of the area, temperature ranges, likely terrain, amount of travel, accommodations, altitude, facilities that are available, and ability to access emergency services, are all things that have to be taken into consideration before booking your activity holiday.

Remember that there is an element of risk in all activities and that although tour operators spend a long time researching destinations, routes, ground operations and equipment, and nothing tends to be untested, your safety can’t be guaranteed.
